Network Backbone

A network backbone is a part of computer network that interconnects different pieces of network, providing a path for the exchange of information between different LANs or subnetworks. The network backbone is the highest-speed transmission path that carries the majority of the network data. It can connect small networks together into a larger structure, or connect server node to the networks where the majority of the client computes are attached.

The technology used on the backbone network can sometimes be much different than the client network sections. Because the backbone cabling connects the switches, routers, and hubs on a network. It can carry more traffic than other types of cabling in the network.
